Well I’ve finally gotten around to uploading the second video in my series “Propagating Tropical Clumping Bamboo”. In this video, I cover how to divide Bambusa Mutabilis via division, which will allow you to plant more bamboo within your yard, share some with friends or in my case list them for sale. This video on propagating bamboo is a bit longer than the first, but you’ll find it very informative, especially since not all tropical bamboos are alike. As allows, if you have any questions about propagating bamboo or questions on anything else please feel free to post a reply.
You helped me on saving extra work and time. I started buda and musa from seed, I know everybody said I was crazy to start from seed but I must have a green thumb for it. It took about a year growing in pots now I’m going to plant in my yard. Thanx for the vidz.
Glad to help. Let me know if you have any questions.
Good video, I live in Jax and built UNF’s Bamboo Garden, Just wanted to share with with all, it is open to the public and has 20 something species of Bambusa. I have 7 different species now and bought from Chuck down south Symnera. Love Bambusa!
We probably have several mutual friends then! I’ve heard the UNF garden is beautiful, and my friend Richard has asked me several times if I’ve been there yet. If you’ve been to Chuck’s then you’ve certainly seen his personal collection. I know the Jacksonville Zoo purchased a majority of their bamboo from Chuck as well, and it’s another exhibit I’ve yet to experience!
I think my count on my little 1/4 acre lot is up around 19 at the moment. Mostly tropical clumpers, but a few runners contained in pots mixed in around the yard. If I could find a few acres I’m sure I’d have more!
I am trying to send a message to Scott at gator ventures .com
I cannot obtain an accurate address in order to send my message.
Can anyone send me the correct address for Gator-Ventures.com e-mail?
Thanks in advance.
Terry Adler
I sent you an email Terry, or you can just ask your question here! Thanks!
Thanks so much for the clumping bamboo propagation by division videos from a few years ago. There are not too many good videos on the subject.
I’m looking at doing that with a few of my bambusa mutabilis and bambusa textilis gracilis.
I heard someone had a problem after propagating with leaning bamboo from the holes. Has that ever happened after propagating?
If you saw out a section, will new rhizome growth still come back where you took it out?
Thanks Scott. Your videos were very informative.
First, let me thank you for the compliments on the videos; I’m glad you found them useful.
Now to answer your question, there’s several possibilities:
1. The parent plant does not have enough rhizome mass to support divisions, and thus what is left behind is top heavy and leans.
2. The division taken has too much top mass and cause the division to lean over, also related to not enough rhizome mass.
3. The soil the bamboo is in is not firm enough to support bamboo. (I’ve seen this with new divisions and the soil just does not compact or when it gets wet turns to much).
Solutions:
1. If parent plant is a newer, previous division, wait at least 3-4 years until you take divisions from it.
2. If established clump, get ladder and top the bamboo at at a level that will keep it stable. Straighten out and tie supports if needed.
As for new rhizome growth, yes, I always back fill the hole with top soil. The bamboo will readily send new rhizomes into this area resulting in more new shoots the following year.
Hopefully this answered your questions. let me know if there is anything else.
Scott
Good advice. I’ll be following your suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to respond. My bamboo really starting a lot of new clumps in the last couple weeks. Great blog about emerald and all things clumping bamboo. Look forward to more updates on your bamboo.
