Well being that Spring is here and I have to actually divide some of my tropical clumping bamboos, I’ve decided to create a short video tutorial on how to do so. Loved the movie. My daughter and I watched this and could barely contain ourselves until morning to go out with a friends saws all to try it. Thank you so much. Meredith cut out five stalks and we will be thrilled to see them survive and become additional plants in her yard. Wish us continued success with the thriving part. Glad you found it useful Morgain! I don’t grow any bougainvillea, so can’t help you on any tips to propagate it. What have you tried so far? I know most plants will grow from cuttings, both hardwood and softwood, and I have had much success with various other plants using this method. Rooting hormones also increase the success rates when propagating plants this way.
We have a large stand of dwarf bisetti tops out at about 22ft. The stand consists of 300 or so plants. Would your method of propagation work with my bamboo.

Most of my techniques involving true propagation using cuttings will not work on Phyllostachys species, including Bisetti. However, certainly taking divisions following one of my video tutorials will work just fine!

Thanks for the information, I’ll definitely use what i’ve learned. I’ve been planting bamboos for a few months here in the Philippines and looking for new technology, everybody is so uptight about their know how here. Fierce garden competition here, everything is a secret. I have Black, Pole, variagated whites, semi whites, buddha, mimiature buddha, creeping black and Golden Buho bamboos which I’m trying to propagate here. I bought some Moso from china but, out of 200 seeds only 1 germinated and its my prized possesion now. I also bought candy cane, timor and falconeri but no seeds germinated. I’m surprised, and many boonut’s I have met in the southeastern US have more than readily willing to share information on bamboo.
As for the moso, I have a really high germination rate with the moso seed I got from China, however, it was the after care and mother nature that took a larger toll on the seedlings. Along with that, many of the more “exotic” bamboo seeds for sale are often found to not be true, and are stated as most likely being D. strictus or some other variety.
Best of luck in the Phillipines with your bamboo. I’m ex-Navy and my brother is Army and says he’s retiring there in 7 years wit his wife, so if I every pay him a visit I’ll have to look you up!

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL. I WAS OUT TODAY WITH A SHOVEL AND A TROWEL AND SAID TO MY HUSBAND, I HAD BETTER GO ON LINE AND READ HOW TO DO THIS BECAUSE I COULDN’T GET ONE INCH THROUGH THE DIRT. THEN IT STARTED RAINING. I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO AND I WILL TAKE OUT THE SAW TOMORROW. IT LOOKS EASY NOW.

I live in a desert where the average summer is about 50 C in the shade, the last major rain occurred about 1000 miles away and the only person who survived it is Noah, so that was a long time ago…What kind of bamboo you reckon would fit in here ? I grow bougainvillea with some success since come summer, it turns into barbecuevillea but blooms back right after.
Also, if I can’t get any rooting hormone (no one needs it except me), what else can I use?
This sandbox grows awesome dates, which get better with fertilizer and pee (don’t tell anyone that though). When you stuff em dates with almonds or suchlike, you get very nutritious instant human propellant and its the only time apart from anatomy you’ll get to put nuts into anything that passed by nuts to begin with….
