Dendrocalamus strictus
Also known as Male Bamboo, Dendrocalamus strictus is a very large, tropical clumping bamboo. Often times the lower portions of the culms are completely solid, making it an excellent choice for building and construction. Said to be very drought tolerant, and is one of the most commonly grown and use bamboo in India. This species, like Moso bamboo, tends to always be in flower somewhere in the world, so seed tends to be readily available. Our stock is currently all grown from seed purchased in 2004. Like most of the Dendrocalamus bamboos, this on is not very cold hardy, withdstanding temps to about 30 degrees F. I know ours have suffered serious culm damage and complete leaf loss when temps dip into the upper 20’s. Culms will grow to a height of about 60 feet and 5 inches in diameter in it’s native environment.
