Bambusa vulgaris
A large, tropical clumping timber bamboo, Bambusa vulgaris is sometimes known as Common bamboo or Giant bamboo. It can found throughout the world in tropical regions, it can reach heights of 60 feet with culms over 5 inches in diameter. A very fast grower, some say it can reach mature size in a just a few years from a single division. You can literally watch this one grow daily when the new culms are shooting! A very open clumper with culms sometimes a foot apart, it’s dark green appearance will make a striking appearance in your collection. Culms do suffer frost damage when temps get below 27 degrees farenheit. I have had to cut this one back every year in my NE Florida yard, but new shoots come back much bigger than the previous years culms! This is the first bamboo I had success with propagating, both through branch cuttings and culm cuttings.
